Sodium is an essential nutrient required by the body for maintaining proper blood pressure and for providing channels of nerve signaling.

Deficiency of sodium is rare, but can occur in people after excessive vomiting.

Over-consumption of sodium can lead to high blood pressure which in turn leads to an increased risk of heart attack and stroke.

Sources of sodium:

Table Salt, Fish, Meat, Cheese, Cucumber etc.

Most foods that taste "salty" - and indeed, many foods that don't - are good sources of sodium. Processed foods are widely known for their high sodium levels (e.g. potato chips, canned soups, processed meats, snack foods).

HOWEVER, very few people should intentionally try to raise their levels of sodium, as the vast major exceed the daily recommended amount already.

That should really not be a concern in our modern culture with so many processed foods. If you eat anything that comes in a bag, box, or can once a day you have already consumed the daily recommended amount of sodium, or salt.

Zero calorie foods are good for someone who is on a diet and are counting calories. It really depends on the diet you are on. While zero calorie foods might be low in calories some are high in carbs. If you are on a low carb diet, such as South Beach, this might effect your diet and do the opposite.
