Taylor and Kearny had both died and Scott designed the Anaconda Plan and retired. General John E. Wool was still in uniform and was still a Brigadier with 20 years of time in grade. At 77 he was the oldest General on either side.

The Mexican, or its other name, the Mexican-US War, was in 1846. There is no direct connection to the US Civil War, other then that many of the generals of the Civil War, fought together and came to know each other.
