Japan pretty much started World War 2 on the Asian side. Japan attacked China and other Asian cities to gain power and land. I belive that Japan thought that they would get more land if they joined they axis side.

Ostensibly Japan sought to redress the wrongs that occurred during the Mukden 'Incident" where part of a railroad was dynamited but the truth was that Japanese militarists (war mongers) used this as an excuse to invade Manchuria .

The militarists made the emperor the "symbol of state" which in turn gave more power to them, (with the popularity of Hirohito and him being "Leader" it was easy to do what they wanted, they meaning the militarists). So after the war was over shame was drawn to him and "quit" the job.
They wanted to 'solve' Japan's problem of its economy almost totally being dependent on foreign imports of raw materials and oil by conquering those contries and taking control of its natural resources. Doing a bit of empire-building in the process, of course.
