While antidepressants do not cure illness they can help to combat the symptoms. Antidepressants can help to correct a chemical imbalance in your brain/body so that you might function more normally.
Antidepressants do work, however they often take 4-6 weeks for the patient to feel their full effect. Therapists generally recommend taking antidepressants and continuing with the therapy.
Everyone's different though. There are several antidepressants and one type that works for someone, might not work for someone else.
Each antidepressant (of the more than 20 different ones) is approximately 60% effective, in terms of producing at least a partial response, and about 35% effective at inducing a nearly complete remission of symptoms (as compared to placebo response of about 30-35%). They do differ, sometimes significantly, in terms of side effect profiles.

This all depends on what antidepressant is being used and the individual. Some antidepressants might work for one individual perfectly fine, but not so well for another. So everyone has their own perception of antidepressants being helpful or not. From a medical stand point they are a great tool to treat depression it just might take time to find the right one. Also, combining antidepressants with therapy can make them more helpful.
