Motorcraft MERCON automatic Transmission Fluid is used in the transfer case
for the 4x4 and all wheel drive systems
i was acctually an unbeliever when a service advisor from the Chrysler jeep and dodge dealership told me this but what he had told me that every vehicle they service they run ATF (automatic transmission fluid) in the power steering.
Use any fluid for use in power steering systems that is labeled Power Steering Fluid.1984-2001 Cherokee Owners Manuals and Factory Service Manuals both state in bold letters DO NOT USE ANY ATF IN THE POWER STEERING.
Possibly low of transmission fluid. Check the fluid level per the instructions in your owners manual. If the fluid level is OK, have the fluid and filter changed.
To check the transmission fluid on a Nubira that doesn't have a dip stick 1. crawl under the car on the passenger side 2. find where the axle enters the transmission 3. remove the plug just to the front(opposite firewall) of the axle and on the transmission. The plug is the fill level, if no fluid drains from the plug, fill until it does, if any fluid spills out you are at the safe operating level. My recommendation is to check all of the fluids, after you know that are at normal operating levels sell the car.
The Fluid type should be labeled on the dipstick. Depending on what transmission you have in your Jeep, it could be Mercon ATF for AW-4 Transmission or Dexronll ATF for the 727 and 999 Transmission.
