Austria was part of Germany for a brief period just before the end of World War One. However, after the war the Treaty of Versailles prohibited the two countries from joining together. The 1930s saw the rise of National Socialism (Nazism) in Germany as well as in Austria. In 1938 Germany annexed Austria, in violation of the Treaty of Versailles, amidst widespread (though controversial) support of the action from both countries.
might not have been answered because of the spelling error... Austria was initially "annexed" by Germany shortly before the end of the war. However, Germany did not actually have to invade Austria to take over. The Allies however, treated Austria as it were and it quickly, after a change of name to become a Republic, was free to continue to rebuild. There were a lot of elements that were anti Nazi but on the other hand Austria had a strong Nationalist Party themselves. Their identity seemed to mix easily with the German agenda.
