Austria was initially "annexed" by Germany shortly before the end of the war. However, Germany did not actually have to invade Austria to take over. The Allies however, treated Austria as it were and it quickly, after a change of name to become a Republic, was free to continue to rebuild. There were a lot of elements that were anti Nazi but on the other hand Austria had a strong Nationalist Party themselves. Their identity seemed to mix easily with the German agenda. Austria has undergone many political changes during the 18 - 20th century.
