The bomb was detonated in an airburst, which limited the amount of fallout radiation to mostly what was directly detonated. People in the city were either incinerated, badly burned, or irradiated depending on their location. Hiroshima and Nagasaki have been safe to live in for a long time and have become thriving cities.

∙ 8y agoIndividually the effect of atomic bombs on the environment is relatively small and transient. It mostly has to do with radioactive fallout issues. Ultimately the radioactive isotopes decay: maybe in days, maybe in thousands of years - but eventually things return to normal.
However, a large nuclear war involving thousands of atomic bombs could ignite forest fires that created enough smoke to block sunlight long enough to trigger a mini ice age and a significant extinction event due to lack of food for humans and animals worldwide. By the time things return to normal, everything will likely be permanently different.
