The chain of events that followed after the assasination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, the heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne by the Serbian, "Black Hand" in Sarjevo, Bosnia, were many and fatal events that led up to World War I;
On the 29th of June, Austria-Hungary, requested an Alliance to deal with Serbia, on the 5th of July, the Blank Cheque was offered to Austria-Hungary by Germany, On the 23rd of July Austria-Hungary threatens war against Serbia if a list of demands were not complied with by the set 24 hour frame. On the 24th of July, the USSR decided to help Serbia in order to eliminate and lessen the Austro-Hungarian influence over the Balkans. Serbia complied to all but one of Austria-Hungary's demands on the 25th of July, on the 28th of July, Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia, the USSR was mobilized but the German threatened war if it did not rescind it's mobilisation order.
On the 1st of August, Germany declared war against the USSR and France. France jumped at the opportunity of claiming revenge against Germany for Alsace Lorraine, and sent orders of mobilisation to support the USSR.
On the 3rd of August, Germany fought against time to implement their Schlieffen Plan and avoid war on two fronts and declared war against France.
Finally on the 4th of August, Germany invaded the neutral Belgium as a part of the Schlieffen Plan. Britain, supporting it's allies and honouring it's promise to defend Belgian neutrality, declares war on Germany.
Thus the outbreak of European War.
