Roman Catholic Answer
England became a part of the reformation more through politics than theological debate. King Henry VIII (1509-47) needed an heir to the throne and with his wife was unable to produce one. The Pope would not grant a divorce and so Henry convinced Parliament to declare him head of the Church in England. He made it illegal - treason, in fact, to attend the Catholic Mass. He confiscated all the Church property, threw nuns and monks out of their monasteries and confiscated their property. All but one Catholic Bishop refused to take the oath of allegiance to the new protestant church, and were thrown out of their sees. Many holy martyrs came out of this period, an English seminary was set up in Louvain, Belgium for the education of priests to minister to the persecuted Catholics in England. The persecution by the state of the established religion was brutal and shameful.
