Some plantations went under or broke into smaller parcels. The plantation culture of the South changed to a Share Cropper system in which the former slave worked the land as a tenant of the land owner, keeping part of the crop himself for his pay and giving part of the crop to the landlord as his rent. Former slaves got the right to vote and elected other former slaves to office, until Reconstruction ended and Jim Crow Laws negated some of the strides, until the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s reestablished voting rights.
