In 1534 at Gaspe Bay Cartier had set up a large cross 9 metres high, decorated with fleur-de-lis, insribed "Long Live the King of France" and it was set up so he could cleverly claim the land for his King Francis I. The job was cleverly done because he had told the Natives of the land that the cross was just symbolic showing the next ship where they had stopped. He had lied because he didn't want to anger the Natives and so he could get what he wanted without loosing more of his men by creating war (he had already lost some on the way to the New World, suffering from scurvy-lack of Vitamin C).
