What happened at the Hadrian wall?

Not massively so. There were a number of small border skirmishes, but none of the setpiece battles that had populated Rome's conquest of England. Though Hadrian's Wall was theoretically a barrier against the Picts & the Scots, any determined invading force would not have been held for long by it. It was largely a signal, from Hadrian to the Scots, that the Empire had no interest in land north of the wall, and would not unduly molest them. Though we can't be sure exactly how this was received, it seems to have worked, for the Scottish tribes never really attempted to threaten Roman Britain in a significant way. jasonwire@priest.com
