Basically, the communists from the Soviet Union and China were trying to spread Communism throughout the world. Because both countries are in close proximity's to Vietnam, they decided that they should invade to spread their form of government. Eventually the U.S. entered and it became known as a war because we were trying to stop China and the Soviet Union. The same kind of thing happened with Korea, and now its two different countries.
