In Chapter 3 of "The Watsons Go to Birmingham," the Watson family travels from Flint, Michigan to Birmingham, Alabama to visit Grandma Sands. The family encounters racial discrimination during the trip, including being refused service at a gas station. They also feel the intense heat of the South and witness the stark differences in racial attitudes between the North and the South.
In chapter 15, The Watsons get back to Flint and in order to cope with the tragedy of the bombing Kenny hides behind the couch at the world famous pet hospital. He realizes toward the end of the chapter that he does not need to hide behind the couch
Byron starts a "war" between the nazis and himself and so he burns the "nazis" and throws them into the toilet. Momma swore to God to burn him if he ever did it again. She grabs him by the neck and hauls him downstairs, where he, surprisingly, doesn't fight against it. When Momma has the match in hand, Joey yells to wait. Joey has conflicted feelings because she is so religious and wouldn't want to make God mad but at the same time doesn't want Momma to hurt Byron. Finally when Momma has told Joey that it's okay and she wouldn't want to hurt Byron but she has to, Joey settles down. But at the last minute, Joey blows out the match. She does this multiple times until Momma gives up.
