On the second day of creation, God created the raqia, or firmament, to separate the waters above from the waters below. According to the "white hole cosmology" developed by Dr. Russell Humphreys and published in his 1994 book Starlight & Time, the firmament includes all of space from the earth's atmosphere to the outer edges of the universe.
(The word raqia and its English equivalent "firmament" suggest solid material, not emptiness and void. This actually corroborates nicely with modern ideas about outer space.)
The "waters above" the firmament, according to Humphreys, probably froze and fractured off into planet-sized balls of ice on the edges of the universe, thus far beyond detection from Earth. This idea comes from Psalm 148:4.
The "waters below" became the planet Earth. (Solid land was created on the third day.)

Simplifying the accounts given by various trabslations: God created the sun, moon (these two to "rule over" the day and night respectively) and stars, as a means of forming a difference between night and day.
Genesis 1:6-7 say that God made the firmament on the second day. This was an imaginary dome which the ancients thought separated the waters above, the constant source of rain, from the waters below. Later, God would afix the sun, moon and stars as lights into this dome.

God set the rakia ("firmament") in place. This refers to the atmosphere, to outer space, and to higher realms as well. The same Hebrew word is used for atmosphere (Genesis 1:20) and for outer space (Gen.1:14).
