After his discoveries, Christopher Columbus was stripped of his governorship of Hispaniola for mismanagement and his treatment of rebellious settlers and Indians. Although he became wealthy as a result of his explorations, he was not given the rewards he felt he was due. When Columbus died on the 20th May 1506, he died still believing that he had found the route to the Asian continent, not the Americas.
Christopher Columbus arrived in Cuba on 28th October 1492. Thinking that he had found the mainland of Asia he christened Cuba 'Juana' in honour of Prince don Juan, son of Queen Isabella of Spain and claimed the island for Spain. However, it was not until 1514 and 1515 respectively that Santiago de Cuba and La Habana (Havana) were founded by Diego Velázquez de Cuéllar, another Spanish explorer.
