On September 29-30, 1941, the German Einsantzgruppen (a military division tasked with murdering Jews) killed 33,771 Jews in the third largest single massacre of Jews in the Holocaust. There were other "smaller" Einstazgruppen attacks on Jews in the same area as well.
The topography was favourable; it was seen as the best place to carry out the executions.

The Einsatzgruppen were active over German held territory. An example would be Babi Yar in Riga latvia. 30 000 were shot one at a time and unceremoniously buried in a ravine known today as Babi Yar. This group was lead by maj lange,rudolph who was killed in action some time later. Major Lange was present at the Wannsee Conference in January 1942.

Beginning on September 29, 1941 more than 33,000 Jews were marched in small groups to the Babi Yar ravine to the north of Kiev (Ukraine), ordered to strip naked, and then machine-gunned into the ravine by SD- Einsatzgruppe C, commanded by Dr. Dr. Otto Rasch. (He was called Dr. Dr. because he had two(!) doctorates).
Hitler killed 6 million Jews. The 33,771 number comes from the single-largest massacre within the Holocaust, called Babi Yar. In two days, 33,771 Jews were murdered. They were killed for the same reasons that Hitler murdered Jews elsewhere as in the Related Question below.
