When Congress adjourns it means they are out of session and done with business. Congress session lasts for one year with there being two sessions. Any bill that has not gone through the entire legislative process before Congress adjourns is considered dead.

Both Houses of Congress adjourn at the end of each day's session. Normally the motion to adjourn will include information on when the next session will be held and weather votes will be taken. A legislative body such as Congress can have "session" without taking votes, to introduce bills, accept messages from the other house etc. At the end of a two year session the motion will be to adjourn "sine die" , which means that 2 year's session business is done. A legislative body can also "recess" which is normally a longer "adjournment" such as a summer recess.

The bill is not passed, called a veto. However, Congress can overrule the veto with a 2/3'rds vote.. I'm a little shaky on the ratio so you might want to check something else.
