A Default gateway
is a node (a router) on a TCP/IP Network that serves as an access point
to another network. A default gateway is used by a host when the ip's
packet destination address belongs to someplace outside the local subnet.
Without a default gateway you will not be able to route packets out
of your LAN

The address of a default gateway can vary widely depending on which device on which network is the default gateway. There isn't one specific default gateway address.A popular address is one used on home based networks, 192.168.1.1
In the computer networking setup, a default gateway connects a local network to the internet. The default gateway error generally refers to an error code where one server receives an invalid response from another server.
There isn't one. The switch only knows about MAC addresses, and the default gateway isn't one of those addresses.
If we are using public ip address, we can browse the internet. If it is having an intranet address a gateway is needed as a router or firewall to communicate with internet.***********************************************Without default gateway you cannot browse internet. It doesnt matter if you are on public or private network. Default Gateway is required to route your IP packets from your network to the other networks.
First, you have to know what the default gateway address for your LAN segment is. This might mean talking to your network administrator. Usually this address is set automatically by the DHCP protocol, so you don't need to do anything. If you are using a set of static addresses, then you can specify the default gateway address in one of the Windows network dialog boxes. For Unix/Linux, the 'ifconfig' command allows you to set the default gateway address. For server 2008 (including Server 2008 Core) use the netsh command to set the default gateway address (if not using DHCP).
A "Default Gateway" refers to the Router to which your Local Area Network is connected to. This Router provides the link to the outside world (Internet or Wide Area Network). If this is a home PC situation then the Broadband Router is the Default Gateway. When your PC requests a network resource (webpage or server share) that is not on the local subnet the request is automatically forwarded to the Default Gateway which in turn forwards the request to the far end (Node) of that link. You can have many Gateways on your LAN, each providing a Route to a particular extenal network. All networks must have one of these Gateways as default so all other requests can be sent to it by "Default" this is where the term comes from.

When you have routing enabled then you need default route (also calleddefault network or Gateway of Last Resort). You do not need default routeif you don't use routing. For example if you just have one router in your network there is no need for default route. When you have more than one router in a network you need default route.Note: If you connect to WAN (Internet) you need default route. The default route allows connection with Internet. If you are not using WAN and have one router than there is not need for default route but in these days everyone connects to the Internet so most likely your router has default route. When using router to connect to the Internet using DHCP this happens automatically so there will no need to configure default route manually. If you need to manually set default route then use the commands IP default-network or IP route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 .More info can be found at Cisco's site - see the related link below.
The FastEthernet interface of R1 is disabled. One of the default routes is configured incorrectly. A routing protocol is not configured on both routers. The default gateway has not been configured on both routers.
