Just like a land based tornado, the rotational current is far more powerful than the updraft, so you are most likely going to be picked up on the outer current , "orbit" the tornado, and be tossed away. Also the sea water will be rather dangerous around it so you will likely drown.
Whirlpools are caused by underwater currents being forced to rotate, usually by some under-water obstacle. Essentially if you were to fall into a whirlpool, you will be pulled down to the bottom and then carried away by the current (you will probably drown).
If you fall into the water you're basically screwed, though depending upon the strength of the whirlpool you may be able to swim to escape. The best chance of escape is by swimming in the direction of the rotation, but angled slightly outward - this ensures that the whirlpool is giving you all the possible speed it can and hopefully you can swim fast enough to get out.
If you're in a boat, however, you have much better odds. You can use the same principle, but crank the throttle. If this is unsuccessful you can drop your anchor (I know it's counter intuitive but it is proven physics that heavy objects will be thrown from the vortex simply because of how much momentum it can carry).
I can imagine it wouldn't be fun but you tend to get sucked down a good 2 or 3 ft before you even reach the center and once you do reach the center you could sink at a good 60 mph and will be planted at the bottom until it stops. You just better hope the whirlpool ends a few seconds after you get sucked in but if your unlucky enough, you may get sucked into the crack at the bottom sea and there's no way you are getting out so I would avoid circular motions in the water at any time. While you may sense the water twirling you still have a chance to swim away but once the whirlpool forms an underwater tornado like fashion, you better wish you got out there early enough.
