Most believe drinking water to be harmless. And in most cases, that is correct. The most likely thing to happen to you after drinking excess water is a full bladder and a trip to the bathroom. Note that after drinking plenty of water, your urine will likely be a light yellow to clear liquid.

However, you don't want to over do it. Yes, you should drink pleny of water to keep yourself hydrated. A little more than usual won't hurt you. But should you take in too much water, you run the risk of hospitalizing yourself or worse.

Did you know that a woman died after drinking too much water during a water drinking contest to win a Nintendo Wii?

~Apple Juice

The concentration of substances in the blood is determined by the amount of water in it. If you drink a lot of water, more will be absorbed from your large intestine and the kidneys will produce a greater volume of dilute urine. If you do not consume enough water, you will urinate less and produce more concentrated urine.

Sorry I'm being nerdy today 8-)

Water volume excess - Total body water increases and no change in osmolarity. Equal amounts of solvent and solute retained.

  • Typically due to kidney failure or excess aldosterone production.
  • Edema (Swelling) occurs all over

Water intoxication - Total body water increases AND osmolarity decreases. More water than electrolytes.

  • Real issue is usually hyponaturia (low sodium). Cells will swell because Extra Cellular Fluid is diluted, which causes fluid to move into cells of the body, Intra Cellular Fluid increases can cause major problems with the tissues they are in (cells will burst), brain swelling = bad.
  • Typically occurs w/ extreme sweating/exercise when individual only drinks plain water (want Gatorade), sometimes problem w/ IV fluids in hospitals or infants. If your dog hasn't had water in days and you notice, then give him plain water, same situation results.
