In Venice, to sign the start of Carnival, a Venitian character, Colombina, descends from the St Mark belltower on a rope while St Mark Square is overcrowdeded. Carnival is a auge festival in Venice, with a week-long holyday and loads of parties. Before the holydays, usually schools have small trips to St Mark Square with original costumes. Some schools have costume competitions! At Carnival, there are loads of puppery characters to cheer from all over Italy eg. Colombina (that we met before), Pulcinella ( Punch or Pulcinello in English) , a neapolitan puppet or Arlecchino (Harlequin). A cake has been invented for the Carnival: the Quiche, made of smoked cheese, mushrooms and sausage. At Carnival, loads of civilians and tourists walk around in Venice, showing off their mask or costume. Venice is very famous for Carnical and their Masks for their beauty, so go there! P.S. A 'Venetian hour' is customary during Italian weddings. During this time, a large variety of pastries, fruits, cakes, and coffees are served on a large table. This is usually done after the cake is cut and the main courses are complete.

A 'Venetian carnival' is a separate thing from the Venetian hour...see link below:
