The remains of the animal are usually eaten by other organisms (scavengers, predators, detrivores), and their atoms become part of the ones that eat them. In digestion, food is broken down and used to build one's own body (material for cell division etc). So everything becomes part of their surroundings, and is part of their surroundings during life as well (as everything eats!).

∙ 13y agoWhen a cell dies, it triggers certain mechanisms that allow white blood cells as well as neighboring cells to take it in. This allows minimal destruction of neighboring cells as well also allowing the cell that phagocytized it to use its nucleic acids and other chemicals.
