When the Sun's light hits the Earth, one of two things will happen.

1. The light will bounce off and be reflected back into space. Light typically (mostly) bounces off of water, clouds or snow.

2. The light will be absorbed, and converted into heat. Heat is absorbed by dirt, rocks, and plants. And people!

Plants use the light to grow. Water absorbs some of the energy and evaporates, becoming water vapor and clouds.

What is the link with the northern lights and a compass?

The formal term for the "northern lights" is "Aurora Borealis". To answer your question, the light show happens when a solar flare hits Earths MAGNETIC field. Without Earths magnetic field, there would be no northern light, nor would compasses be at all useful- THAT is how they are linked. God, I'm such a nerd. Would you believe I'm only 12 years old?

How much solar energy comes from the sun?

The amount of energy varies and depend on factors that include distance from the equator, height above sea level and of cource weather. An average of 1,000watts per meter (peak) is usually quoted for engineering purposes and there are an estimated 6 hours of peak exposure. To get the energy per square foot, take 1000watts and multiply by .093 This results in 93 watts per square foot. What surprised the Lion when he hit the Tin Woodman?

The Tin Woodman himself surprises the Lion when he hits the Tin Woodman in "The Wizard of Oz."Specifically, the Lion hits the Scarecrow, who is sent flying off. But nothing happens when the Lion hits the Tin Woodman. The Tin Woodman gets knocked over, but the Lion's claws and roar make no impression. Additionally, hitting the Tin Woodman begins a chain reaction that is nowhere in evidence with the Scarecrow. Toto barks, and Dorothy slaps the Lion.

Is the umbra larger during a solar eclips or a lunar eclips?

The "umbra" is the darkest central shadow; the "penumbra" is the lighter partial shadow. Since the Earth is much larger than the Moon, the Earth's shadow is larger than the Moon's shadow. The "umbra" of the Moon is only about 300 miles across at a maximum when it hits the Earth, which is why a solar eclipse (which is the Moon's shadow on the Earth) covers such a small area. The Earth's umbra during a lunar eclipse (the Earth's shadow on the Moon) more than covers the entire Moon.

Is energy absorbed or reflected by earth?

The solar energy that reaches the Earth is called insolation.Of the incoming solar radiation 16% is absorbed by the earth's atmosphere, 3%is absorbed by clouds and 51%is absorbed by the earth's surface, making a total of 70%.

Correct. A solar eclipse is when the Moon's shadow hits the Earth.

How does sun generate electricity?

It can be used by solar panels to give a direct output of electric power. Or it can be used to make plants by photosynthesis, which uses the Sun's energy to break down carbon dioxide into carbon which is used for the plant tissues, and gives off oxygen. The plants can then be burned, which produces energy to drive an electric generator, and gives off carbon dioxide. When the plants have time to turn into coal or oil (100,000,000 years) that is caused a fossil fuel.
