it is the plates scraping in a result of built up pressure... if you shake a coke bottle it will explode with built up pressure. take two puzzle pieces and slide them past...the same thing happens with these plates.

minor earthquakes and tremors, like what's happening in California at the moment. the pacific and American plates are moving along next to each other - but the America one is tilted slightly inward and the pacific plate is moving faster. not an ideal example, but one of the closest we have!

They can cause an earth quake if they just grind. If they ram into each other, it could cause mountain ranges, volcanic eruptions, or deep trenches/ valleys.
