The gaps between the alveoli cells of the lungs, and the capillary cells of the surrounding bloodstream, are large enough only for oxygen molecules to pass through. Despite nitrogen making up a greater consistency of the air around us, its molecules are too large to be absorbed into the blood.

Air does not get into the blood by any natural process of the body. There is a large area of capillaries the size of a tennis court that is in our lungs, and when we inhale, there is a process of difusion where our blood releases carbon dioxide and absorbs oxygen into our blood.

Roughly 10ml or more air will cause the heart to lose its "prime" and pump air. Air cannot be pushed like blood, thus the system will stop flowing, and death occurs fairly quickly.
