What happens when the planets align?

Actually it wont be "nothing major".

When all of the planets line up it will effect the earths temperature,the moons (resorting in water effects) and other natural disasters ie.earthquakes,volcanoes erupting,tornados,hurricanes etc...

The year of 2012 will have the next planet allignment...according to scientist this will take place during 21st of December,the same day the mayans predicted the world to end (or the end of Mayan calander).

The sad truth is, "all" the planets will never align because they are at different angles from the sun. If you look at the solar system in 2D from the top (in general) they will align someday, but as far as looking at them in 2D from the side goes they will probably never align perfectly. Well not as long as any of us are alive anyway.

Nothing special. All the planets align about every few thousand years, and have for the last few billion or so.

About 20 years ago, there was a big panic that the planets were going to align, and that this was going to cause massive earthquakes. They aligned, and NOTHING happened.

To be honest, the gravitational forces of the other planets is so tiny, they couldn't disturb a butterfly.

Actually the planets align every 50 thousand years and when they do we don't know what happens but its not good. You know how in the past we have seen things that for some odd reason just got whipped out... well that's essentially the idea. Scientists believe that there will be massive radiation from the sun and/or there will be an electrical storm killing everything.

The massive radiation is the SOLAR WIND. When all planets allying in a line the wind take shape of comet like structure and penetrate the Earth's magnetic field and enter inside. These solar wind have energy about 10MeV, sufficient to destroy everything.

Nothing or (this is a theory) the gravity of all the planets might be combined to pull part of the Sun's atmosphere (yes, the Sun does have an atmosphere that is visible during eclipse) straight at the planets. The planets will roast and if the planets don't explode then the planet will keep pulling. The Sun atmosphere might continue heading straight and any thing in the way will get destroyed, or the Sun's atmosphere will get pulled back to when the planet move out of alignment.

The gravity on each planet changing slightly along the line of the alignment, which may slightly affect the tides on earth. Viewing the planets would be much brighter than normal, as you are seeing light from more than one together.

Nothing. The tidal forces from the planets are pretty miniscule; and the planets have been stable in their orbits for billions of years.

It would make a pretty sight in the sky, with Mars, Jupiter and Saturn all visible within a few degrees of eachother - but even then, it wouldnt be spectacular enough to take people's breath away.
