When it reaches the flame, it ignites and burns with an extremely bright white light. It's so bright it could damage your eyes, so you should not look directly at it. The magnesium metal combines with oxygen from the air to form a white ash called magnesium oxide. This is a redox reaction. Magnesium atoms lose electrons and oxygen atoms gain them, resulting in an ionic compound, Mg2+O2- (where the numbers and charges should be superscripts). There is also a small amount of reaction with the nitrogen of the air, forming magnesium nitride.

If pure magnesium is burned in pure oxygen, the compound magnesium oxide is produced. If the magnesium is burned in ordinary air, the same compound is the initial product, but magnesium oxide can react rapidly with water vapor to form another compound, magnesium hydroxide, which might easily be the predominant product detected.

Magnesium is one of the metals that can actually burn in absence of oxygen. There are some videos on Web that you can look for where they show you burning of magnesium metal chunks in between dry ice slabs. This is the reason why firefighters do not use typical carbon dioxide fire extinguishers to put out the fire that has caused by magnesium metal.

Simply burning magnesium in the steam of boiling water which has the cool properties of A) bright light as Mg reacts. B) Mg turns to MgO which leaves afew loose Hydrogens about and these react with the Mg burning and show as a orange flame. C) Mg carries on reacting underwater creating bright flame. The piece of magnesium is too tiny to sustain itself when submerged in water, but it does burn brighter when it comes into contact with the water.

If you are heating the magnesium in a glass tube, the magnesium also reacts with the glass. That leaves dark grey products (including silicon and perhaps boron from the glass) as well as the white magnesium oxide.

It reacts with oxygen to make magnesium oxide - the reaction is very violent with a bright white light given off, and the resulting MgO is a white powder
