As you might expect from the term "expansion", they get farther apart from each other - at least on average. They also tend to gain more vibrational energy, rotate faster (when able to) and move around faster in general.

What happens to particles when boiled?

Boiling occurs when the intermolecular forces holding a substance in the liquid state become overwhelmed and allow the particles to separate into the gaseous state. Particles in the gaseous state are roughly 2000 times farther apart than in the liquid state, which causes expansion of the substance in its gaseous form.

What happens to the temperature of a solid when it is heated?

Heat affects the properties by speeding up the particles and providng them with more energy. As they heated the bounce off one another and expand the solid. When it's cold, The particles have less energy and don't move as much, This results in contraction and the solid shrinks. Basically, Heat ---> expansion Cooling -----> contraction
