FIREWORK
It's a firework
A "Catherine wheel" is a pinwheeling fireworks display, so both it and some rockets are types of fireworks. Other than that, they are totally dissimilar.
The saint was allegedly martyed or tortured ( or an attempt was made) on some sort of spiked wheel. the Catherine Wheel- mainly English usage is a pinwheel driven by fireworks rocket charges around the rim, they were popular in Fourth of July celebrations as they had a lower fire-hazard potential than explosive fireworks- strictly speaking the Catherine Wheel-or pinwheel did not explode but had several slow-burning rocket charges driving it pin-wheel fashion. why Ezekielian wheel was never used (Biblical UFo prophet!) I do not know, maybe it is in Von Daniken"s territory.
St. Catherine's Monastery in Sinai, Mount St. Catherine in Egypt, and the Catherine Wheel firework are named after Catherine of Alexandria. She is also the patron saint of scholars, philosophers, and preachers.
