Why di astronomers thought there might be many objects beyond Neptune?
In the same way as astronomers thought there was an object beyond Uranus leading to the discovery of Neptune. However, in recent times it was realised that the results of measurements of perturbations of Neptune's orbit should be put down to experimental error, and so Planet X does not exist as such - although many more smaller minor planets have been discovered since then.
