Desdemona is not at all successful although she tries really hard. Unfortunately Iago has set things up so that the harder she pleads the more Othello thinks she must be doing so because he is her lover, and the less likely he is to grant her request. It was a lost cause from the start.

Why did iago want cassio to ask Desdemona for help in restoring Othello's faith in cassio?

If Desdemona asked a favour on Cassio's behalf, it would look to Othello like she was doing it out of an improper love for Cassio. The harder she argues, the more suspicious it seems to Othello.

How would Iago gain from Rodrigo's death?

Roderigo has been threatening to ask Desdemona for the money and jewels he has given to Iago to try to persuade her to marry him. Since Iago has actually pocketed the money and jewels himself, this will reveal him as a cheat and a fraud. Better that Roderigo should die than that Iago should be outed in this way.
