I have experience with a 1984 and a 1991 civic. The large nut at the wheel in the center of the hub needs to be removed (usually its tightened to about 150 ft lbs), the lower ball joint gets disconnected and the hub is moved off of the outboard end of the axle shaft. The inboard end of the axle is retained into the transmission with a clip mounted on the end of the axle. You can release the axle from the transmission by carefully placing a prybar between the trans housing and the axle and popping it out.
