What did the Founding Fathers learn from the example of the Roman Republic?

The Founding Fathers believed in the rule of law. It must be written down. The Declaration, Articles & the Constitution are all examples of this. Consequently, the "Twelve Tables," set a precedent. SHS While Greece was the origin of democracy, the concept of every citizen having a say significantly limited the Greeks ability to organize a government any larger than the City/State. Rome's principle innovation was the concept of a republic; that every person need not have a say, but that every region be represented by a person whose vocation is representing the interests of their region. Each territory of Rome also had an independent governor, and entirely separate system of local governance. Thus Rome ruled effectively thru a tiered layering of governing organizations. Local issues handled by local officials with only larger issues being handled by central authority. The ultimate form of the US Constitution capitalized on the pre-existing State identities to found federal government as simply the top tier in a System similar to Rome's. There was another significant contribution inspired by Republican Rome... the recognition that the Senate was a deliberative body and could not be expected to respond swiftly to any sudden threat or crisis. Republican Rome, when faced with such situations, would draft what they called a "dictator"- A temporary executive who would have the power to command when time was of the essence. In Rome this person was selected by the Senate from among notable citizens who the Senate felt trustworthy, or capable. After the crisis had passed, the Dictator would step down. Perhaps the most famous example of this was the Roman dictator Cincinnatus. The founders recognized in this Roman tradition the need for an executive to act decisively, and the importance of the idea that any executive ought to be temporary to prevent them from become tyrants. These were the influences that led to the final form of the office of President.
