If not then screw him, what have you lost? i agree in a way. my answer to my daughter has always been to love someone, but not to need them. if they don't love you back, you have 2 choices. love them unconditionally, without expectation, in which case it doesn't matter if your love is reciprocated or else find someone else. if you don't need them it is easy to end the relationship.
