The Civil War impacted President Lincoln greatly. Although the secession of the South was not entirely his fault, as Commander-in-Chief, he had to assume responsibility for all the deaths the war brought. He had to endure family strife, since his wife was a member of a slaveholding family and nearly all of her relatives had some role in the Confederacy. While it was obvious the Confederacy was against him, members of his own party, like the Radical Republicans as well as the Abolitionists who elected him were openly antagonistic against him because they believed he was being too soft on the south.

Abraham Lincoln, in addition to playing a major role in the abolition of slavery, managed to maintain the union of the country in the midst of an ugly and bloody civil war. He also had great contributions to the nation in regards to banking and commerce.

Before the Civil War, Abraham Lincoln was a common man who worked at his father's store. He liked to study law, but started his journey to president when he requested that he and Stephen Douglas hold a debate, as they were both running for senator at the time.

From what I read he was filled with problems and concerns. His first problem was the civil war. It started soon after he took office and he had to handle the pressures that came from that as well as run the government. In his personal life his son Tad died of illness and his wife Mary Todd was unstable. She liked to shop and would spend more money than they had and when her son died she would spend hours in her room crying. Historians think she may have been a manic depressive. Lincoln also had health problems and if you compare photos of him from 1861 to the time he died he ages more than what he should have aged. Considering all the pressure he had in his life he did a pretty good job as President.
