It changed the northern states by letting them be connected with the southern states.

It wasn't much of the American Revolutionary War that changed the northern states. It was the Declaration of Independence that would make the change between the North and the South.

When the Second Continental Congress met on July 4, 1776, before the document could pass, it had to have all 13 American Colonies (their representatives) to agree to it's passage. This meant that if only 1 of the representatives had voted no on the passage of the Declaration of Independence. The American Colonies would remain under the control of England.

One thing that divided the Southern representatives and the Northern representatives was a clause that Thomas Jefferson (who wrote the Declaration of Independence) had added, that would have allowed all men to be free. This meant that the Black slaves in the southern part of the country would have to be freed from their white masters.

Thomas Jefferson was forced to remove the clause, and the Southern states voted to pass the Declaration of Independence.
