The sewing machine was actually one of the leading inventions which gave way to the Industrial Revolution. It led to increased socioeconomic and cultural advances in both Britain and the U.S. The sewing machine gave rise to the textile industry, which had previously been done by hand. So now with people at sewing machines, working at an unprecedented speed compared to the older methods of producing textiles, the clothes and valuables were made at a much faster pace leading to an increase in style, fashion, as well as an economic increase due to the new material on the market.

As to what exactly the sewing machine changed in the Industrial Revolution isn't a very good question, considering the sewing machine was a cornerstone of the Industrial Revolution to grow off of in advances in science, medicine, technology (railroads and steam boats being huge), and trade. I hope I could accurately answer your question!

The sewing machine was very popular and some people were influenced by it or by the inventor. In 1876 a tailor started a magazine(McCalll`s) to promote his dress paterns. There were Social effects, such as industrial and domestic.(people were occcupied and driven to learn to sew... mostly women.) The sewing machine was also very good for quilting. Some bands were so influenced by the sewing machine, even The Beatles had a film called "Help!". The 1965 Beatles film Help! was dedicated to Elias Howe, "who in 1846 invented the sewing machine." The sewing machine helped the first industrial revolution evolve with all of its crazy inventions to come. Also it revolutionized domestic and social patterns of that time.
