The Collective Unconscious is term and concept popularized by psychologist Carl Jung, considered a part of analytical psychology. Jung called it "a reservoir of the experiences of our species."

In other words, each person has an individual "psychology" and also a group or shared "psychology" that is made up of the combined shared experiences of humans. This encompasses everything from science to religion and philosophy. Jung believed that individual psychology influences the individual while the collective unconscious influences the whole group. The influence may not be on a level perceived by the group, but it is non the less a real force in his view.

You can read more about these views in Jung's work Psychological Types.

Carl Jung was the first person to use the term collective unconsious. It is a term that talks about the state of the psyche as a whole amongst a group of people. As a total they might be unaware of what is going on around them, and that what their experiences are in not fact unique, but ones that multiple people are also experiencing.

Collective unconscious means inherited unconscious. It refers to all the instincts, drives and images you were born with. It is collective because everyone else was born with them also.

Why is valid psychology and psychiatry accepting the teachings of someone like Carl Jung who was mentally disturbed?

I assume you mean by valid psychology and psychiatry those schools of psychology that deny any and all subconscious processes. I find them not so much valid as incomplete and in denial of deeper psychological dimensions and structures. Behavioral Psychology denies the existence of a subconscious mind when it is clear that everyone has one. Everything about the mind is not rational but behavioral psychologists like to claim that it is either because the idea that they have a subconscious mind scares them so much that they are in denial or they are simply not intelligent enough to understand it. What makes you say that Carl Jung was mentally disturbed? I don't see that in his biography and I don't see it in his work or writings. The Only thing that I see is a tremendously intelligent mind, able to see and understand complicated mental processes that men of lessor intelligence can't even see are there. I've read about 10 or so of His books and I see nothing but brilliant intelligence and no hint of any mental disturbance. I used to work as a Registered Nurse on psychiatric units in hospitals for 20 years so if there was any mental disturbance there I should have seen it.

What are two kinds of unconsciousness?

It could refer to a medical unconsciousness or a spiritual, intellectual, or worldly unconsciousness. Someone can in the first instance, be knocked unconsciousness from a concussion, brain injury or coma. One could also become unconscious with anesthesia or induced coma. They would not be brain dead and would also be in a state of subconsciousness, using other brain waves or different parts of the brain in a dream like state. But they would be mostly unaware of what was happening around themselves. In the second instance it would mean that they weren't fully conscious in everyday life. It would refer to a person not being aware of their feelings or the feelings of others, or the reality and depth of things around them, in a larger sense, as in the world. It would mean that there were different levels of "awareness" and some therapies, personality theories, and religions try to teach a greater or heightened awareness. They use prayer, meditation, and talk therapy as a way to do this. It led a personality theorist from Harvard, Timothy Leary, to use LSD as a quicker way to awareness. Tibetan Monks, for example, use meditation to quiet their brains to achieve greater and expanding awareness and get to the highest level known as enlightenment. Most cultures who practice achieving enlightenment, ie: Carmelite nuns, Native American Medicine Men/Women, and individuals through personal tribulation (see Nelson Mandela, Martin Luther King Jr.) describe this state as a great compassion, acceptance and understanding.___________Another take:A person not being conscious of something is different from the person being unconscious. Not being conscious of something is the same as being unaware. You can be fully awake and alert and be unaware of a person's actions behind you, for example, or unaware of the subject matter of a nearby conversation that you are filtering out in order to focus on your own conversation. You are unconscious during sleep which is a natural, healthy and cyclic kind of unconsciousness. You are completely unaware of anything around you unless it is arousing enough to awaken you. You are unresponsive to any kind of question or cue. Sleep cycles are complex, and your responsiveness to different cues changes over the course of a cycle. You are also unconscious during a coma, which can result from severe trauma or it can be medically induced for various reasons. I think general anesthesia can be considered a kind of induced coma which is temporary, controlled and for the most part completely harmless in the long run. But this kind of unconsciousness is not normal and is different from the sleep cycle.
