Vincent was emotional and lacked self confidence. He had two unstable, unhappy romances...
He also had a unique perspective which resulted in a wild vision of nature , images that still inspire a different view of the world. He allows us to see the world in a more free and unstructered way. True, he was a tortured soul in many ways and was confined in a mental institution for some time. Still, he left us an enduring legacy in his art. Art that will be appreciated for years and inspires others to let their imaginations run free.
Insanity and drugs surely helped. Severe depression, if I can draw from personal experience, helped him to create the claustrophobic marks and swirls in many of his paintings. As his sanity dissolved, so did the representationalism of his work. His personal life was a mess and he was not well-liked nor well-respected as an artist. Sadly, van Gogh's influences were of the intense, miserable type that so many people have to deal with. Only after death were his works appreciated.
