Full understanding of the periodic table can be an invaluable reference tool to know what reacts with what, and what kinds of bonds they make, how they position themselves against others in a molecule, and more. Sadly, rarely are these traits of the periodic table taught.

Each box on the periodic table of elements shows at least three things. The number at the top of the box is the atomic number of the element. The letters in the middle of the box are the chemical symbol for the element. Remember that capitalization matters when writing those symbols. The number at the bottom of the box is the average atomic mass of the element.

More advanced periodic tables may contain information about electron configuration, common oxidation states, and number of electrons in each electron shell.
