The complete ionic equation gives the ions involved in the reaction.
Of course the method is applicable to compounds able to be dissociated.

It is something especially helpful to school.

It can identify which species are involved in the reaction, and possibly provide clues about the mechanism.

For example the nett ionic equation for all acid-base reactions is simply

H+ + OH- --> H2O

This can explain why all neutralizations have the same heat of reaction, and why they can all be grouped as a single family -- acid plus base makes salt plus water.

Can the complete ionic equation and the net ionic equation for a double replacement reaction ever be the same?

Yes. If both compounds are insoluable in water then the complete/overall ionic equation and the net ionic equation will look the same. The only way they look different is if there are spectator ions(ions that appear on both sides of the equation).

The chemical equation that shows all ionic reactants and products is known as?
