Actually, there is some evidence that as far back as the third grade, he was thinking about this-- he was a boy, and not exactly sure what a president did, but in a school essay, he wrote that he wanted to be president because they "help people" and "make people happy." Years later, I think he was inspired to enter politics because of the work he had done advocating for the poor and being a civil rights attorney; this led to his trying to change society for the better at the local level while in politics in Chicago. He was certainly influenced by the achievements of presidents like Franklin Delano Roosevelt and John F. Kennedy, as well.

It is not clear that any one person motivated him to run for president; he certainly had political heroes and mentors; but when he entered politics in 1996, there is no evidence in his writings or in articles about him that he had a plan to seek the presidency one day. In fact, he seemed content to be in the Illinois state senate, serving the people in and around Chicago.
