1984 (Nineteen Eighty-Four)is a novel written in 1948-49 by George Orwell. For its time it was futuristic. It was set in England and showed the world as a very depressing place. There was a very big war that was being fought by the Americans and Russians. England was an American base called Airstrip One. There were cameras everywhere and everyone was watched by "Big Brother". Big brother was a name for the state. The state was always on the lookout for people who were breaking the rules and then punishing them until they obeyed the rules.

1984 was published in 1949 by George Orwell. It is basically about what Americans feared at the time-- Communism. In the futuristic, negative utopia based world, what used to be America, Canada, the British Isles, and some other territories are controlled by a government called English Socialism. Winston is a man who lives in London and works for a department of the Party (which is what their oppressive government is commonly known as) and alters all records of the past that are contradicting to the present. In a world of lies, concealment, and trickery of the Party, one man stands against the larger power. As he begins to loathe the Party more and more, he discovers what is truly going on-- the secret "Brotherhood" that seeks to oppose the Party, the mysterious, well-protected Ministry of Love, and the shady figurehead of the Party, the supposedly immortal Big Brother.
