.22 ammunition is plated in copper rather than jacketed in copper. The difference being, larger calibers have an actual copper jacket fitted over the usually lead core. .22 caliber ammunition, on the other hand, has a much smaller bullet component, making it extremely hard to manufacture a copper case as a separate component for the bullet itself. To remedy this, .22 manufacturers copper plate them instead. The process is similar to chrome plating, or nickel plating components in a chrome or nickle chemical/electrical bath. They do this to coat the bullet in a very thin copper plating that will prevent lead fouling in a guns barrel.
