Pallas was a titan who acted as a foster parent to Zeus' daughter, Athena. Athena was the goddess of truth, wisdom, and war. When Pallas was slain by Athena, she adopted her name, gaining her power, and after was known as Pallas Athena. Asteroids have historically been given female names. The asteroid called Pallas was discovered by Heinrich Wilhelm Olbers on March 28, 1802. It is one of the largest known asteroids and the largest of the Pallas family. It was named after Pallas Athena. Prior to 1855, the astrological symbol was used for this asteroid. After, asteroids were referenced by their discovery number circled. Since Ceres was the first asteroid discovered, Pallas has the number 2 in a circle as its symbol.
