Why do you think that Barack Obama is charismatic?

Many people believe President Obama is charismatic because he is a good speaker who has the ability to inspire and motivate an audience. These are valuable skills, and not every president has them: Herbert Hoover, for example, was a notoriously poor public speaker, especially on radio (the dominant medium of his day); conversely, both Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton have exemplified charisma and skill at public speaking.

Even those who don't always agree with him will acknowledge that Barack Obama is a gifted and eloquent speaker. At his best, he is able to establish empathy with his audience and make them feel as if he is talking directly to each of them. His speaking style is both conversational and personable, and he seems to genuinely enjoy talking to people. (Not every politician can do this. Some sound awkward or forced. And in fairness, at times, Mr. Obama can sound "lawyerly," as if he is teaching a course.) But when he is connecting with an audience, he is able to not only relate to them; he is able to inspire or motivate them. Thus, I would say his ability to connect with various kinds of people and lift their spirits could certainly be called charisma.
