Can you use a regular compact fluorescent bulb in a 2-way desk lamp ie it has 'I' and 'II' brightness levels?

The GE website says the following regarding 3-way lamps:"GE does make CFL bulbs for use in 3-way lamps. Check the package for this application. If a regular CFL is use in a 3-way switch, it will work on the middle (medium) setting and it should not damage the bulb. The 3-way switch does not alter the performance of the bulb."There don't appear to be 2-way CFLs in existence, so I don't know what this means for a 2-way lamp. Will it damage the bulb (ballast?) to be using a regular CFL in a 2-way? How would it actually work in that situation? I don't know because I don't understand the mechanics of a CFL and how these 2-brightness lights work. Hopefully someone else can shed some light! (ha)

Why CFL bulbs are in tubular in shape instead of being as typical bulbs?

CFL tubes work on the principal of fluorescent effects produced by electrons. Electrons emitted from the cathode in CFL tubes are incident on the chemicals pasted on inner walls of the CFL tube and visible light is produced there as a result of fluorescence. Now, since the electron beams travel only in straight lines, the CFL tube has to be linearly straight for optimum incidence of electrons on the walls of CFL device.

What is lamp types?

There are two types of lamps the tungsten halogen lamps and incandescent lamps. Tungsten Halogen Lamps are similar to incandescent lamps and produce light in the same manner from a tungsten filament; however the bulb contains a halogen gas (bromine or iodine) which is active in controlling tungsten evaporation, whereas the incandescent lamp suppresses tungsten evaporation.

What happens to the power output of the source if more lamps are connected in parallel?

Nothing will happen to the possible output power of the power source i.e it will not increase. Each power source has its maximum possible output power. Adding more lamps in parallel will result in a drop in the circuit's total resistance which causes the total current drawn by the lamps to increase. Your wires might be burnt as a result so be careful.

What can one use CFL lamps for?

CFL stands for Compact Fluorescent Lamp, and they are an energy-efficient alternative to incandescent bulbs. CFL lamps can be used to replace these bulbs, and they can be placed both indoors and outdoors.

When will be the Mercury lamps will be stopped in market?

If you are referring to fluorescent and CFL lamps, it can never be totally eliminated. These are mercury vapor arc lamps using a phosphor to turn the UV to visible light. They have reduced the mercury dramatically, but it can't be totally eliminated. If all fluorescent and CFL lamps were banned and lighting was all converted to LED then use of mercury could be stopped. However most LED lamps cost at least ten times what CFL lamps cost.

Why do you use CFL insted of electric filament bulb?

The power consumption is lower on CFL lamps. Result, you save money operating them.

Is there a dimmable CFL bulb that can be used with an electronic dimmer?

Compact fluorescent bulbs used to be all or nothing. They couldn't be dimmed. Most cfl lamps (bulbs) are this kind. However, special cfl bulbs are now being marketed, at a higher price, that can be dimmed by a normal dimmer switch previously used for incandescent bulbs. However, not all dimmer switches work with these newer dimmable cfl lamps.

Do any car replacement lamps use CFL bulbs?

There are not currently any car replacement lamp that use CFL bulbs. I wouldn't be surprised to see them or something similar in the near future.

What is the terminology HPMV for a lamp?

It is a High Pressure Mercury Vapour lamp.

What does a CFL with choke mean?

A CFL is a Compact Florescent Lamp. Compact florescent lamps are more complex than a traditional lightbulb, and the circuits inside the CFL create electrical "noise" in that can affect other devices. The choke is a coil or inductor that is designed to filter out the noise to reduce it's interference with other devices.

Last week I attended a stage show in my city I noticed that whole stage was decorated with compact fluorescent lights lightning. What I want to know is the number of watts that CFL lamps use?

In a stage show it needs various types of CFL and Sylvania offers comprehensive range of high-efficiency fluorescent lamps in various lengths, diameters, wattages, colours as well as lamps for a wide range of specialist applications. Only watts doesn't matter in stage show.

Can you use LEDs instead of CFL lamps in house?

Yes, although cost issues may prohibit. I've seen companies that make LED/lightbulbs.

Is there a compact fluorescent bulb that's equivalent to a 120V bulb?

As long as the CFL has an intermediate base it can be interchangeable with any ordinary light bulb that has an intermediate base. Look on the packaging as to comparability. Look on the box for equivilant outputs between lamps to compare wattage bulbs to CFL's.
