What did double standard refer to?
A "double standard" is when a standard is used to measure someone against the normal standard. It is often used to discriminate because of gender, age, or race. An example would be a woman who wants to run a company, but she has to meet standards beyond what a man would that would make it harder to reach her goal. That would be a double standard.
